Le Padaek

Vientiane, Laos

Follow the path through a lantern strung-garden to reach Le Padaek, set on the edge of a waterlily-scattered pond. It’s a setting that couldn’t be prettier, especially as dusk falls – though if you plan to sit on the stilted balcony, watch out for mosquitos. Inside, the thatched dining rooms is equally atmospheric, with its woven screens, tassel-edged lampshades and cushion-strewn cane chairs. The menu offers a masterclass in Laotian flavours, whether it’s ribbons of papaya, bright with chillies and fish sauce, or marinated Mekong fish, steamed in a banana leaf. Nothing feels hurried here, and every dish brims with flavour, from slow-simmered broths to seasonal specials like the sweet-and-sour Marian plum salad. Take your cue from the regulars and order the standout sai oua: homemade pork sausage, spliced with local herbs and served with a charred chilli sauce.
