Jammal
Batroun, Lebanon
Whether you arrive by boat, car or taxi (around an hour from the centre of Beirut), the freshest of fish awaits at Jammal, a Batroun institution. Set in a small translucent bay, the restaurant's terrace is so close to the sea that guests can practically dip their toes in the water. There's a little jetty and parasoled loungers on the beach, adding to the idyllic scene. This place buzzes at breakfast time, where regulars sit in the shade of palm trees for plates of labneh with homemade jams and organic honey. Long languid lunches and starlit dinners will have you savouring hot and cold meze, homegrown salads, and seafood that's cooked just as you like it – grilled, oven-baked, deep-fried or raw. If it's available, order the hearty Portuguese fisherman's stew with seasonal veggies, herbs and white wine, cooked in a traditional copper cataplana. Service is laid-back, but, with a view like this, nobody seems to care.
