Château Cana
Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
The Lamartine Valley takes its name from the eponymous nineteenth century French poet who rhapsodized about its hillsides covered in pine trees. You will too after viewing them from the atmospheric terraces of Château Cana, the warmly lit stone winery in the shadows of a giant grey rock formation more than a thousand years old. Inside this micro-estate, just 30 minutes from Beirut, the owners tell the story of how it came to be – a community project in the 1990s that used grape-growing as a means of repopulating villages abandoned during the Lebanese civil war – whist pouring you wines including their inimitable ‘Jardin Secret,’ an exclusive example of Lebanon’s intense Sobbaghieh grape.
