Six Senses Laamu
Laamu Atoll, Maldives
The spa group’s Maldives address provides playful hospitality: an imaginative, ingenious offering of transparent bathtubs, glass desks, hammock-hung corners and water villas with their own towers. It’s a playground for adults. Where other Maldives resorts emphasis sumptuous luxury, Six Senses deal in outrageous escapism. The only resort on the paradisical Laamu atoll, surrounded by an iridescent lagoon that’s just asking to be explored, this stay has a “no shoes, no news” policy to encourage guests to embrace their castaway experience. Newspapers aren’t easily accessible and it’s entirely possible to while away whole days without seeing a soul. All villas have either lagoon or private beach access – and the two-floor over-water ones promise sunset views. Dining is healthy and veg-packed. It’s even in the name of the signature restaurant: Leaf, located on a treetop platform, looks down on the garden where its menu is plucked from. Other dining highlights including the 12-guest Zen, and the Sip Sip sunken pool bar. At the spa, treatments are taken amid nature. Sustainability looms large in the land of sinking islands, so expect whip smart eco initiatives: a pioneering scheme run in tandem with NGOs works to protect resident sea turtles and other marine inhabitants.
