Otahuna Lodge

Christchurch, New Zealand

Located just outside Christchurch in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, this Victorian estate is as much about its grounds as its lodge, with 12 hectares comprising botanical gardens, daffodil fields and wild woodlands. The house is equally impressive: first built in 1895 for New Zealand politician Sir Heaton Rhodes, this sense of grandeur remains today thanks to classical design, an all-inclusive offering and meticulously manicured gardens. The hotel has just seven suites, each bespoke in design but replete with period details such as stained glass and wood-burning fireplaces. Outside, the Great Lawn sets the stage for grand events, including weddings and polo matches, while the vegetable garden, orchard, greenhouse and mushroom house provide plenty of bounty for potager-to-plate dining. And since this was once a private residence, guests are made to feel right at home. Meals are served wherever they feel most comfortable – whether in the cosy library or secluded turret.
