Ba Ban
Muscat, Oman
Housed within the W Muscat hotel in the Omani capital’s prestigious Shatti Al Qurum Beach area, the slick, moodily lit Ba Ban is loved locally for its contemporary Chinese cuisine. Ba Ban means “eight beats”, and the restaurant pays homage to the music scene of 1930s Shanghai, when a hybrid form of Chinese jazz was all the rage. This is reflected not just in the dishes but through the decor: plush red velvet banquette seating, black-and-white floor tiling, shimmering emerald accents and a ceiling adorned with traditional parasols. Overseen by W Muscat’s executive chef Alain Allaire, the menu marries premium local and international ingredients with classic Asian recipes - think Omani lobster rice, Wagyu beef dim sum and wok-fried Australian lamb. With impeccable service, a well-curated drinks list and a good choice of desserts, guests would be forgiven for hoping that the fortune cookie served with coffee contains the message “you will return soon”.
