Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo Panama City

Panama City, Panama

Sofitel has brought its sophisticated French flair to the shores of Panama City, revitalising a stately building in the historic Casco Viejo district. Formerly operating as the Union Club, the century-old property welcomed esteemed guests including Albert Einstein and Queen Elizabeth II over the years, before shutting its doors for several decades. In 2022 a team of architects, artisans and historians restored the building to its former glory, making it worthy of the Sofitel Legend name – the label attributed to hotels occupying heritage buildings. Waterfront rooms nod to the brand’s French roots with four-poster beds, breezy Juliette balconies and Diptyque toiletries, yet Pacific Ocean vistas, local artwork and colonial-era furnishings remind guests of their whereabouts. Meanwhile, a spa specialises in Kos Paris treatments, the restaurant has a decidedly buzzy brasserie feel, and fresh pastries with locally roasted coffee can be found at the vintage-style Vera Café. Tours dive into the history of the building, though guests might be more drawn to the hotel’s outdoor pool – the largest in Casco Viejo.
