Cirqa

Arequipa, Peru

When discovering the Unesco World Heritage Site of Arequipa in southern Peru, it makes perfect sense to stay somewhere just as steeped in history. This 11-room Relais & Châteaux hotel resides in a meticulously restored 16th century monastery, displaying soaring vaulted ceilings, wrought-iron furnishings and rooms arranged around a tranquil terrazza. White sillar stone, sourced from the three volcanoes encircling the city, forms the basis of the architectural structure – revealing the origins of Arequipa’s ‘White City’ moniker. Inside the hotel’s walls are peaceful and atmospheric rooms, traditional in style yet equipped with 21st century amenities including smart TVs and wireless speakers. It’s unlikely, however, that guests will be cloistered to their quarters. The hotel is just a block from the lively Plaza de Armas, and Cirqa also organises excursions to natural springs, dramatic canyons and traditional villages across the region.
