São Lourenço do Barrocal

Monsaraz, Portugal

In the largely rural Alentejo region of Portugal, São Lourenço do Barrocal offers a unique experience of terroir tourism. Jose Antonio Uva, the eighth generation of his family to run the 780-hectare farm, converted the historic land into a shrine to the region’s famed grapes, olives and food. Guests are immersed in the workings of Uva’s many agricultural pursuits, which are a tribute to Barrocal's 200-year-old farming legacy. Ranching, beekeeping, vegetable farm and winemaking are just a few of the onsite pursuits open for guests to explore. The estate can be traversed on house bike or vintage 4x4, but for the true experience, visit the stables and explore on horseback. The agricultural elements are harvested and then elevated daily at the four bars and restaurants found off the cobblestone paths. Despite the rustic atmosphere, the 22 rooms and suites beneath the vintage terracotta roofs are stocked with modern comforts. Earthy materials, custom-built furniture and woven wool blankets enhance the motif while smart TVs, underfloor heating and 100% Egyptian cotton linens deliver superlative comfort. Susanne Kaufmannn handles the toiletries as well as the popular Spa Barrocal.
