Award-winning Portuguese chef José Avillez brings his talents to a restored farmhouse in Portugal’s Alentejo region. More than a hotel, this 65-hectare estate on the banks of Lake Alqueva is available for exclusive hire, accommodating up to 20 guests with all meals included. Time slows at this lakeside retreat, where whitewashed interiors come with wood beams, large windows, peach-toned furnishings, and shelves adorned with Portuguese pottery, plus the occasional stuffed deer in a nod to the surrounding wilderness. Each of the ten suites has either a balcony, terrace, or porch, while Avillez’s team serves farm-to-table meals crafted from local, seasonal ingredients. The estate also has two swimming pools, a private mooring for boat arrivals, and activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, and water-skiing. On rainy days, guests can retreat to the cinema room, wine cellar, or library – or explore the nearby medieval town of Monsaraz.
