Hamilton Russell Vineyards
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, South Africa
- No.99 The World's 50 Best Vineyards 2025
Founded in 1975, Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of the most southerly wine estates in Africa, and one of the closest to the sea. Nestled in the maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in Walker Bay, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus, the region is known for its clay-rich soil and cool sea breezes, which create elegant expressions of chardonnay and pinot noir that tip their hat to Burgundy. The estate specialises in highly idiosyncratic and terroir-driven pinot noir and chardonnay bottlings, which are widely regarded as the among the best in not only South Africa but the New World. Vineyard tours and tastings at the winery's scenic lakeside estate are by appointment – be sure to try their flagship pinot. Elegant and earthy, it's packed with a mixture of red berry and savoury flavours.
