Londolozi

Sabi Sand, South Africa

Londolozi, on the banks of the Sand River in the heart of Sabi Sand, is one of the OG private game reserves, a family-run business that’s been introducing guests to Greater Kruger National Park’s natural spectacle for a century. The name is the Zulu word for 'protector of all living things’, a reflection on the safari lodge’s deep commitment to conservation, not least its work in protecting the legendary leopards that roam here. There are five camps with various levels of accommodation – Tree Camp, Varty Camp, Pioneer Camp, Founders Camp, the Granite Suites and private villas – some are more suitable for larger groups and families with interlinked skywalk rooms, others are super plush with outdoor baths and heated swimming pools. All have wildlife-spotting views and offer access to the 34,000-acre plains that the Big Five call home, with knowledgeable rangers and trackers on hand to help you spy herds of elephant and buffalo, the white rhino and lions – and, of course, the wild leopard. The African cuisine is a big part of the journey – homemade breakfasts on a sunrise game drive, lazy alfresco lunches set out beneath giant baobab trees, rounded out by fireside banquets beneath a blanket of stars.
