Bars by nature are meant to be transportive spaces, but step into Kiez and it really feels like you’ve entered another time and place. With its parquet flooring, decorative wall sconces and geometric lighting motif above the bar, this a Bauhaus beauty straight from 1920s Germany. Yet the drinks menu from owner-bartender Dongyeol Shin, who grew up in Hamburg, is global and timeless in its approach. A fizzy, carbonated Toh-mah-toh has gin, clarified tomato juice, dill and citrus, and feels like drinking a sun-drenched summer garden. Rice and Shine combines mezcal with scorched rice, coconut water and lime in a nutty, sour pour. And a martini-esque The Peanut Pear-adox – dry, stiff and totally unique – pairs peanut butter-washed vodka with pear and dry vermouth. Kiez means ‘neighbourhood’ in German and you’ll quickly wish that this was your local.
