Lunuganga

Dedduwa, Sri Lanka

With 25 acres of lakeside grounds giddily packed with lush, tropical planting, including fragrant frangipane, the Lunuganga Estate was the lifelong project of architect Geoffrey Bawa. Once a disused rubber plantation, then the late architect’s home, the Sri Lankan coastal stay has now been transformed into botanically infused luxury hotel. Buildings pop-up, plant-like, across the grounds, offering sumptuous suite accommodation. The intimate stay – run by the Teardrop Hotel brand – only has a handful of rooms. All pair whitewashed simplicity with artwork and furnishings from Bawa’s collection. Simplicity continues on the Sri Lankan menu at the terrace restaurant: spice-infused classics of coconut fish curry and grilled barramundi are among possible encounters. The outdoor seating in hot demand; just be wary to wear insect repellent and limb-covering clothes. Of course, the garden is the star: weaving English cottage garden and Japanese styles with touches of Italian Renaissance, it’s a melody of global horticulture. Ask a staff member for a tour, as stories run wild in its rambunctious corners. Hotel amenities are on the slim side, but you’re here for the history: the pared-back elegance allows the garden, and the stories, to shine.
