Thotalagala

Haputale, Sri Lanka

This intimate bungalow is steeped in Sri Lanka’s tea country, set among lush rolling plantations and misty mountains. Formerly belonging to a tea planter, the beautifully restored building now houses seven suites – each named after a British figure that played a role in the province’s tea industry. Guests can stay in the Sir Thomas Lipton suite, which pays tribute to the founder of the eponymous tea brand, or learn about James Taylor, the man widely credited with introducing tea to the Ceylon region. Each suite has its own charming 19th century character, with details including checkerboard bathroom floors, dark wooden furnishings, rattan accents and flora-adorned furnishings, plus fans to cool guests down in the humid weather. Experiences are also shaped by the tea tradition: order high tea in the highlands, or visit the Dambatenne Tea Factory and Lipton’s Seat.
