Wild Coast Tented Lodge
Palatupana, Sri Lanka
If you dream of waking up each morning surrounded by nothing but flora and fauna, Wild Coast Tented Lodge in Yala is the last word in nature immersion. The lodge sits on the edge of the biodiverse Yala National Park in southeastern Sri Lanka, at the intersection where jungle meets beach meets Indian Ocean. But this is no ordinary tented camp; rather, wildlife-loving guests sleep in one of 28 cocoons. These award-winning structures are nestled amongst the lush vegetation, with soaring ceilings and double height-glass and canvas facades for a jungle or ocean panorama. All feature copper bathtubs and king-size, four-poster beds – and some come with private plunge pools. There are watering holes nearby or the lodge’s informed guides will take you on a game drive to look for elephants, sloth bears and leopards. Either way, nothing beats twilight cocktails and canapés in the garden, followed by dinner at the extraordinary poolside restaurant and bar. Here you’ll perch on seating made from a combination of elephant dung and clay, beneath sustainable bamboo chandeliers, to feast on Sri Lankan flavours.
