Amanwella
Tangalle, Sri Lanka
The Aman group has two hotels on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, both of which dole out laidback luxury in scenic surrounds. Amanwella overlooks a crescent-shaped bay near the town of Tangalle, its 800-metre beachfront providing access to plenty of aquatic adventures, from surfing and snorkelling to dolphin and whale watching between December and April. Proximity to the Indian Ocean and a passionate fishing community certainly has its perks, with guests encouraged to play a part in the preparation of their dinner. Chefs are on hand to dish up whatever guests catch offshore using the traditional hand line method of fishing. Australian architect Kerry Hill’s contemporary chic design, meanwhile, draws inspiration from the tropical modernism of Sri Lankan legend Geoffrey Bawa, with 30 freestanding suites featuring floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors to take in the coconut-fringed hillside, sea-facing views and lush jungle-like gardens. After a taste of the rural Aman offering, guests can extend their stay at sister property Amangalla in Galle, which ranked No.38 in The World's 50 Best Hotels 2024.
