Gstaad Palace
Gstaad, Switzerland
This Swiss grand dame has been standing proud since 1913 and only gets better with age. Gstaad's first luxury hotel was, somewhat surprisingly, built by local secondary school teacher Robert Steffen, who predicted an uptick in tourism after a new railway line passed through the postcard-perfect village. Ever since, the hotel's popularity has turned the once tiny farming village into one of Switzerland’s most prolific ski destinations. Michael Jackson, Elton John and Diana Ross have graced the property, but despite this prestige, rooms remain sweet and homely with plaid fabrics, autumnal tones and snow-dusted mountain views. Outside, there are clay tennis courts (used to host the Swiss Open), five restaurants including a former bunker which Swiss bank Schweizerische Bankgesellschaft (otherwise known as UBS today) used to stash gold bars during WWII, and the iconic GoGreen Club, Gstaad's only nightclub, replete with its original 1970s interiors.
