Set in the charming fishing town of Urla and tickling the boats along the buzzy harbour, Yengeç’s moniker says everything about its slant. Translating from the Turkish for ‘crab’, this place is all about the fruits of the sea served overlooking the briny harbour front, or within the romantically rustic dining room. It’s a setting that provides a holistic backdrop to the likes of pan-fried grouper, clams in wine sauce, honey squid and whatever else the day’s catch happens to bring. Expect a superlative array of mezze – over 100, in fact – mostly revolving around fresh local vegetables and wild herbs. Interesting Aegean desserts – perhaps figs with ice cream, baked halva or an artichoke-based delight – plus a wide range of raki, too. Its reputation precedes it; best to book ahead.
