Climb the stairs to the sixth floor of a 1950s-era office block on Charoen Krung Road and you’ll be rewarded with Charmkrung, a buzzy Thai wine bar with a focus on sharing dishes. The man behind the operation is Aruss ‘Jai’ Lerlerstkul, who is also one of the founders of Charmgang in the Yaowarat neighbourhood, much lauded for its curries. Its little sister is quietly catching up in the popularity stakes. Grab a seat at the bar to watch the energy of the open kitchen as Lerlerstkul and his skilled team beaver away until late into the night. Or sit at one of the bright red tables and order a selection of the small bites and medium plates. All pack a punch, from dry-aged fish served on betel leaves to garlicky soft-shell crab stir-fried with green peppercorns and beef brisket panang with grilled banana. If you’re with a group and it’s on the menu, order the roasted duck. The wine list will please those who like natural pours and the cocktails are stylish.
