Macakizi
Bodrum, Turkey
Long before Bodrum became a hotel hotspot with names like The Edition, Maxx Royal, and Scorpios, there was Maçakizi. When Ayla Emiroglu arrived in 1977, the area was a quiet village, home to locals and few international travellers. Nestled in a secluded Türkbükü bay, the hotel began as a boho retreat, reflecting the town’s laid-back vibe, but has since evolved into one of Turkey’s most iconic destinations. Maçakizi may have resort-like facilities, but it oozes effortless cool. Minimalist rooms let the spotlight fall on sensational views, whether of tropical gardens or the cobalt Aegean. Chef Aret Sahakyan’s Mediterranean-Turkish fusion won the Maçakizi restaurant its first Michelin star – among Turkey’s first – and his new venture, Ayla, explores dishes inspired by his childhood. The spa completes the experience with a Turkish hammam and al fresco wellness treatments amid treetops.
