Ox
Belfast, UK
There are very few restaurants in Northern Ireland with a Michelin star – Ox being one of them. It all began when Belfast native Stephen Toman was working at The World's 50 Best Restaurants regular, Arpège in Paris, where he met Brittany-born maître d' Alain Kerloc'h. The two became friends and in 2013, they combined skills to open Ox in Belfast, overlooking the River Lagan. A huge window bathes diners in light, while the simplified fit-out, including chairs from a local church, belies the brio of the tasting menus. Meticulous standards and an ingredient-led philosophy are the drivers here. Each dish leaving the kitchen showcases what's in the ever-changing Ox larder, a list of which is regularly updated on the website. Throw in wines from unusual regions and a broad selection of Irish craft gins and you'll understand why booking is essential. Expect the polish of a world-class fine diner with the warmth of a neighbourhood bistro.
