Beaverbrook
Leatherhead, UK
If you're looking for a hotel that’s imbued with history, romance and style, Beaverbrook ticks the boxes. The country house retreat, nestled in the woodland- and wildlife-rich Surrey Hills, was once the home of press baron Lord Beaverbrook who was a consummate host, welcoming the beau monde to his sprawling 470-acre estate with its Italianate gardens (take a look at the visitors’ book to see for yourself). The sense of hospitality remains to this day, with attentive staff ensuring guests make the most of their rural escape. But this is a place that also surprises, not least with its art collection, curated by creative director Sir Frank Lowe. You'll spy works by Gerhard Richter and Jean Cocteau, though a standout is the spa, where stained glass artist Brian Clarke has fashioned six of the treatment rooms and the pool house with a wildflower motif. There’s also an outdoor pool. At some point during your stay, you’ll likely end up sipping gin cocktails in the Art Deco-fabulous Sir Frank’s Bar; dining options include elegant The Dining Room; the Garden House restaurant, tucked away behind the walled kitchen garden; and British fare at Mrs Beeton’s. Rooms are divided between The House, The Coach House, The Village and The Garden House, with four-poster beds, deep tubs and marble showers aplenty.
