Pompette
Oxford, UK
There is the north Oxford of Inspector Morse and punting in the university parks and, further north, there is Summertown, too far for the tourists and populated with what passes in Oxford for real people (academics, medics, publishers). It’s a salubrious neighbourhood that now has a cracker of a neighbourhood restaurant courtesy of chef Pascal Wiedemann (formerly of Racine and Terroirs in London) and his front-of-house wife Laura. The French bistro dishes are elevated beyond cliché to stonecold classics thanks to exceptional attention to detail: hand-minced beef in the steak tartare, superb homemade breads, a freshly dressed remoulade, a plaster moulding of perfect meringue. Half the room is restaurant, the other half bar: just the place for a chunky plate of charcuterie and a half-litre carafe.
