Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort
Kailua-Kona, US
The original Kona Village opened in 1965 and closed when a tsunami destroyed most of the property in 2011. Togther with owners Kennedy Wilson, Rosewood group subsequently took over, restoring the heart and soul of this legendary Big Island retreat while bringing in some inspired updates. Now, the resort has five restaurants and bars, including the renovated Shipwreck Bar & Sushi and Talk Story Bar, plus a spa, tennis and pickleball courts, cultural centre and archaeological sites on the property, which spans 81 acres along the shores of Kahuwai Bay. Guests can explore the winding island paths by bicycle or enjoy experiences like ancient healing rituals, sunrise paddling and outdoor movies. The accommodations include 150 hale – bungalow-esque traditional Hawaiian buildings – which are free-standing and feature oversized lanai and outdoor showers. With views ranging from garden and lagoon to mountain and beach, each hale is designed so guests feel immersed in the magic of the region without having to sidestep any tired stereotypes. Notably, the resort is powered entirely by solar energy, with several spaces winning LEED Gold certification.
