Stag's Leap Wine Cellars
Napa Valley, US
Named after the giant geological palisades hurdled, legend tells, by a stag fleeing some hunters, Stag’s Leap’s vineyards sit in the peaks’ shadow. They are home to the region’s first Cabernet Sauvignons, and the most iconic, winning outright at the notorious ‘Judgment of Paris’ blind tasting of 1976 that pitted New World wines against the French. A more recent visitors’ centre designed by Javier Barba reflects the grandiose geology, using exposed rock exteriors, grand arches, and plenty of glass to take in the Vaca Mountains. Inside, the Caves’ lengthy underground tunnels lead to the Round Room, where one of the world’s few Foucault pendulums perpetually swings whilst, up in the open air, wine-paired picnics grant exclusive access to the FAY Lake. Reservations are essential.
