The Long Island Bar

New York, US

Originally opened in 1951, this Brooklyn landmark used to serve burgers and beers to dockworkers, before closing in 2007, a big neon sign was all that remained. Fast-forward seven years, and legendary bartender Toby Cecchini (creator of the Cosmopolitan) and partner Joel Tompkins stepped in. Today, the booth seating and some of the old floral wallpaper remain, while an updated Reuben sandwich comes with smoked beet sauerkraut and the double-patty burger is served with house-made cheese, sour pickles and ‘fancy sauce’. Cocktails are assured and eminently drinkable, ‘The Long Island Gimlet’ and ‘Pineapple Daiquiri’ being particularly good.
