Ojai Valley Inn
Ojai, US
This Southern Californian estate may have started out as a country club, but it’s evolved over the course of a century into a sprawling 89-hectare resort, just 45 minutes from Santa Barbara. Along the way, it’s enjoyed several incarnations: from a private golf course, to a cinematic Hollywood set, and military training centre. Today it resembles a village – both in size and amenities – attracting families and corporate groups alike. Guests can tee off at the PGA golf course, take a dip in one of four pools, unwind at the ‘spa village’, discover the grounds on horseback and roast s’mores by moonlight – or head offsite for a hike in the Topatopa mountain range. There’s even a cottage dedicated to creativity, hosting workshops by local artists. The resort’s six dining venues draw on the California harvest, with plenty grown onsite – including honey from the apiary – and there’s a market-style shop selling grab-and-go treats. Accommodation isn’t an afterthought either, with elegant rooms featuring luxury Frette linen and high-tech entertainment systems, plus balconies or patios for the most part.
