  • No.48 North America's 50 Best Bars 2023

Located in Phoenix’s Century Grand building lies one of the most interesting bar concepts in the city, if not the state and indeed the entire country. Inspired by the golden age of locomotive travel, the Platform 18 experience begins with guests booking a ticket (making a reservation) before entering its fully immersive bar universe designed by a former Disney Imagineer. Each guest’s 90-minute curated ‘journey’ begins at the platform, decorated by moss-covered oak trees, before voyaging into its 36-seat replica presidential Pullman train carriage, decked in stained wood furnishings, gold embellishments and ‘windows’ showing the view of the Deep South flying past. But Platform 18 is more than just a gimmick. Behind the bar’s serious drinks programme are duo Asher and Jax Donahue, who use their onsite lab to craft a stellar drinks list. Cocktails such as the Blame the Dutch (coconut oil-washed gin, lemongrass, lime leaf, lemon, lime and chilli oil) are standout creations that seamlessly blend modern technique into its vintage background. Its other 1930s and 40s period-appropriate drinks on offer are just as refined.
