Hotel Sacher Vienna
Vienna
A legacy property with sweet beginnings
Celebrating an icon: The 150th anniversary of this bastion of Viennese hospitality is approaching. Hotel Sacher Vienna was opened back in 1876 by Eduard Sacher, the son of the creator of the original Sacher-Torte, Austria's most famous chocolate delicacy. Since then, the hotel has carried the family name and represents a perfect blend of tradition, luxury, cultural significance and renowned Austrian warmth.
Where history meets heart: Located across from the Vienna State Opera, right in the heart of the old city, Hotel Sacher has been at the centre of Vienna's social and cultural life since its very beginnings, especially thanks to Anna Sacher, who took on the management of the property after Eduard Sacher's death. The hotel's location is fantastic, providing easy access to all of Vienna's major landmarks – St. Stephen's Cathedral, the MuseumsQuartier (the largest museum of modern and contemporary art in Central Europe), the Hofburg Palace, and the nearby Kärntner Strasse shopping street, which stretches from Stephansplatz to Karlsplatz.
Timeless elegance: The hotel offers 152 spaces to stay, including 86 elegant rooms and 66 lavish suites. Each abode is individually decorated, preserving classical elements while blending them with modern amenities. If you have the chance, stay in one of the suites overlooking the opera house or St. Stephen's Cathedral for sublime sunset vistas. Interiors are a symphony of warm tones, velvet, parquet flooring, marble bathrooms and crystal chandeliers, creating an atmosphere of opulence that's been meticulously crafted by designer Pierre-Yves Rochon.
A stage for icons and royalty: Throughout its storied history, the hotel has welcomed a remarkable array of world-famous guests – from politicians and royal families to celebrated artists and actors, including JFK, Queen Elizabeth II, Vivienne Westwood, George Clooney et al. Among the most memorable moments of its history was when John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged a peace performance in one of the suites, disguised as a press conference and hidden under white bags. The hallways are adorned with portraits and oil paintings from the collection of former owner Anna Sacher, while showcases preserve silverware gifted by the extravagant Habsburgs and tapestries bear the signatures of former guests. Despite its grandeur, the hotel radiates warmth and hospitality, with staff who are perfectly courteous, knowledgeable and ready to help with any wish, whim or request.
What about the city? Vienna is undoubtedly a hub of gastronomy, and the hotel's restaurants and bars are thematically tied to colours – the Rote Bar, Grüne Bar and Blaue Bar – each with elegant interiors, luxurious chandeliers and artworks. The Sacher Café and Bel Étage offer a more relaxed atmosphere, ideal for enjoying the original Sacher-Torte with a glass of sparkling wine. A pianist adds to the perfect atmosphere, gently playing the piano while you dine on Austrian specialties – from Wiener schnitzel to strudel –in a refined setting accompanied by impeccable service.
Spa days: After a full day exploring the city, you'll want to unwind at the hotel's spa, which comes with themed chocolate treatments and a sauna. A spacious, modern, and fully equipped fitness room is also available.
