Janu Tokyo
Tokyo
A buzzy retreat with a constellation of culinary treats
What's the story? Janu Tokyo opened in 2024 as the inaugural flagship of a new brand born from the Aman cosmos. Unlike the coolly escapist luxury bubbles synonymous with all things Aman, Janu – meaning 'soul' in Sanskrit – is open, playful and connected to community, with a buzzy urban ambiance and even (something of an Aman anomaly) splashes of colour, all anchored in the contemporary luxe DNA of its family roots.
Where is it? Its location is key: it's the only hotel in Azabudai Hills, an expansive and progressive development in the heart of Tokyo, aiming to redefine the paradigms of urban living. Here, it spans the first 13 floors of one of three shiny Cesar Pelli-designed skyscrapers – with its lower levels spilling into the green heart of Azabudai Hills, home to contemporary artworks, flowering trees, flagship stores and chic shoppers.
Paint a picture? Interiors mirror a minimalist touch of Japan with a European edge, topped up with bright contemporary artworks, as dreamt up by longtime Aman collaborator Jean-Michel Gathy. Inside, there are 122 rooms and suites, eight buzzy restaurants and bars plus a vast wellness centre and two sleek Aman boutiques.
And the rooms? While the public spaces are contemporary, bright and playful, the guest rooms reflect the more minimalist side of its Aman DNA: picture peacefully clean-lined contemporary décor with a natural material palette, alongside organic motifs etched in traditional sakan wall plaster, serene bathrooms behind sliding screens and balconies.
A taste of food and drink? It's hard to know where to start. Among its cornucopia of offerings? Hu Jing, with modern Cantonese served up in a blazing scarlet interior; Ligura, home to Edomae sushi served at an aromatic cypress counter; and laid-back Italian Janu Mercato, home to deli counters, craft coffee and an outdoor terrace spilling into the heart of Azabudai Hills.
And how best to recharge? Work out and switch off in the impressive wellness centre, an epic 4,000sq-metre sanctuary spilling across four levels. It's home to one of Tokyo's largest (and most high-tech) gyms with close-up city views, plus an expansive indoor pool, with hydrotherapy and thermal areas. Relaxation unfolds across seven spa treatment rooms and two Spa Houses (one for banya, the other hammam), while the more active can visit five movement studios, with activities ranging from boxing to spinning.
