Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong
Hong Kong
The iconic flagship that launched a global luxury brand
Give me the lowdown: Since first opening its doors in 1963, the original Mandarin Oriental has grown into the cornerstone of a now-global luxury hotel group, with properties across five continents. Renowned for its refined take on Asian hospitality, the hotel remains a beloved institution in its hometown – woven into the very fabric of Hong Kong. Its central location, classic rooms with harbour views and excellent service continue to attract a high-profile crowd of business leaders, creatives and international jetsetters. The hotel is currently undergoing a major USD$100 million renovation, set for completion in late 2026.
More on the renovations: The hotel will remain fully operational throughout the works, which are being carefully phased to limit guest disruption. Public spaces, including the lobby, are being reimagined by renowned French designer Hubert de Malherbe. Expect a brighter, more modern aesthetic and the introduction of a brand-new whisky bar. Interior specialists Jeffrey Wilkes (DesignWilkes) and Thierry Lemaire are spearheading the redesign of rooms and suites, including the addition of 11 apartments. Meanwhile, the award-winning spa will be reintroduced with an enhanced Wellness Club concept.
And the restaurants? Dining is getting a major upgrade. The most anticipated new arrival is a rooftop French restaurant by acclaimed chef Daniel Boulud, due to open in 2026. It's set to become a culinary hot spot. Also debuting is a pizza counter concept by Daniele Cason, the talent behind The Pizza Bar on 38th at Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. Existing favourites, including the Michelin-starred Mandarin Grill + Bar, Clipper Lounge, Krug Room and Mandarin Cake Shop, will all be refurbished. The Aubrey, which ranked No.10 in Asia's 50 Best Bars 2024, will continue service uninterrupted.
What are the rooms like – for now? Guests can currently choose between two room styles: Tai Pan rooms, featuring warm wood panelling and Asian accents, or verandah-style rooms, which lean more contemporary with black and white marble bathrooms. Both offer views of either the city skyline or Victoria Harbour. Suite guests receive automatic access to the exclusive Mandarin Club lounge.
