Mohamed Benabdallah is a vital force in ensuring Bittor Arguinzoniz’s remarkable restaurant, Asador Etxebarri, retains its place in the highest echelons of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list after so many years. Benabdallah – sometimes Moha, or often just Mo – is more than just a considered and skilled sommelier, he’s also the beating heart of the dining room.

Hi journey into the hospitality world is marked by a remarkable trajectory: born in Algeria in 1984, Benabdallah's life took a pivotal turn when his family relocated to Switzerland when he was just 11 years old. This move laid the foundation for a career by exploration, dedication and expertise.

HIs true initiation into the realm of wine took place when he joined another lauded Spanish restaurant, Quique Dacosta in Denia. Under the expert guidance of Jose Antonio Navarrete, he honed his sommelier skills and cultivated a profound appreciation for wine's role in enhancing culinary experiences.

With a thirst for further refinement, Benabdallah chose to continue his journey in Spain. He found a home at Mugaritz, near San Sebastian, where he dedicated six transformative years. His commitment and passion were evident as he advanced from sommelier to head sommelier and took on the multifaceted responsibilities of a maitre´d, all while simultaneously elevating his craft.

In late 2017, Benabdallah embraced a new chapter in his career by joining Etxebarri – No.2 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 – where he remains so pivotal. In his role as the head sommelier, he meticulously curates exceptional wine selections that complement the restaurant's smoke-licked offerings and looks after a list of more than 400 bottles. Simultaneously, he assumes the role of restaurant manager, ensuring the seamless operation of this prestigious Basque Country establishment.

As his career continues to evolve, Benabdallah’s expertise remains a source of inspiration in the realm of hospitality, making him a true luminary in his field and the worthy winner of The World’s Best Sommelier Award 2025.
