Smoke & Bitters

Heartwarming hospitality the Sri Lankan coast

Set among swaying coconut palms on Sri Lanka's southern coast, Smoke & Bitters is a heartfelt expression of place, people and generosity. Since opening its doors in 2020, the bar has built an international reputation for its guest experience deeply rooted in Sri Lankan culture, recognised this year with the Michter's Art of Hospitality Award 2026.

Behind the bar is duo Don Ranasinghe and longtime friend Lahiru 'Lalla' Perera, who brought the project to life from a shared desire to celebrate Sri Lanka's culinary and cultural heritage. Ranasinghe, who was born and raised in London before relocating to Sri Lanka in 2016, spent years reconnecting with his ancestral roots and developing a vision of hospitality shaped by warmth, curiosity and genuine human connection.

The drinks programme is deeply tied to its surroundings. Working within the realities of Sri Lanka's import restrictions, the team embraces local ingredients, transforming a necessity to improvise into an avenue for creativity. House-made liqueurs, bitters and cocktails showcase indigenous produce, family-owned distilleries and traditional spirits such as arrack, while forgotten local ingredients are reimagined across both the food and beverage offerings.

But the true heart of Smoke & Bitters lies in its people. What began as a six-person operation has grown into a team of around 60, most of whom originate from nearby villages. Through a culture centred on listening, learning and care, the bar has cultivated a reputation for making every guest feel valued.

Against a backdrop of economic and social challenges, Smoke & Bitters has become a beacon of modern Sri Lankan hospitality – proving that the most memorable experiences are often created through authenticity, generosity and an unwavering sense of welcome.
