The Clumsies
Athens
Greek party vibes and seasonal sips
Housed inside a restored neoclassical townhouse in central Athens, The Clumsies is one of the defining bars of the contemporary cocktail era. Since industry veterans Vasilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis opened the all-day venue in 2014, it has remained a fixture on The World's 50 Best Bars list, climbing as high as No.3 in the list's 2020 edition. In turn, they have been instrumental in helping establish Athens as one of Europe's most vibrant drinking cities, earning a reputation for balancing world-class technique with unapologetically Greek hospitality.
The bar itself unfolds like an inviting home rather than a traditional bar, with guests moving through a series of interconnected rooms and floors that range from energetic and social to more intimate and lounge-like. During the day, locals flock for the food – the burger is always well-recommended – and the relaxed vibe. At night, though, be prepared to bring your dancing shoes as the bar comes alive with DJs setting the rhythm of the evening and palomas fuelling the lively crowd (the Greeks know how to party).
Cocktails from the menu are worldly in their inspiration and use of techniques, but distinctly Greek in their composition. The team draws on regional ingredients, Mediterranean botanicals and seasonal produce to create cocktails that feel both polished and playful. Take the Aegean Negroni for example, a herbaceous twist on the Italian staple featuring gin, vermouth, bitter, fennel and Cretan dittany. Equally popular is the bar's seasonal Daiquiri, a rotating expression that captures The Clumsies' inventive style.
