New Entry

No stranger to the 50 Best Bars lists, Shingo Gokan’s work is legendary in Asia and beyond. At Sip & Guzzle, New Yorkers will discover a sister property to his Tokyo original, SG Club (No.3 in Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2021 and No.10 in The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020). Like the flagship, the Greenwich Village destination touts two complimentary concepts spread over two floors.

Upstairs, Gokan’s Odd Couple collaborator (and Employees Only veteran) Steve Schneider helms Guzzle, a lively bar room. Guests fill the wood-accented space to quaff Japanese beers, perfect highballs, and ‘crushable’ cocktails. Here, a simple negroni is infused with strawberries, coconut washed, and served over a single, flawless ice cube to become a Miami Vice Negroni. Downstairs, Ben Yabrow leads a more formal programme at Sip. The traditional Japanese room offers a sophisticated vibe and the cocktails follow suit. Think a Whisky Nigiri that mixes the titular spirit with sushi vinegar, sake, and wasabi while the Wax On blends shochu, coconut yogurt, fig leaf, and Japanese wax.

Rounding out the all-star team is Mike Bagale, former Executive Chef of Alinea (No.15 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017). At Guzzle, the kitchen serves up a host of innovative snacks like Fried Mochi along with more substantial fare such as the signature Electric Chicken (friend and deboned and served spicy). At Sip, the menu provides playful dishes conjured from unabashedly luxurious ingredients. For example, the Royale with Cheese Meal features a Wagyu sandwich presented in a golden box alongside a boozy riff on a Cherry Cola float.
