La Table Krug
Manama, Bahrain
Forget the fact you’re right there in the middle of the busy Bahraini capital, instead, when you nab one of the 16 seats at this très chic space inside The Ritz-Carlton it’s all about 19th century France. Moody, dim-lit and a little bit secretive, this very gilded and very demure restaurant is the first Middle Eastern outpost from the venerable champagne house of Krug. The interior is decked out in rich burgundy fabrics, deep buttoned banquettes, gilded frame paintings and dark words from top to toe that mimic a French countryside chateau. Tasting menus are five courses of splattered art – chef Alexis Knecht was heavily inspired by Jackson Pollock’s works when he trained in France – and a pudding so playful it resembles a Jeff Koons-like balloon-dog chocolate and blueberry confection. It’s easy to join in on the fun.
