Borgo Mooca

São Paulo, Brazil

The whole world's love affair with simple Italian food, natural wine and stripped-back mid-century restaurant interiors is showing no sign of abating and, for our money, São Paolo's Borgo Mooca is a mighty fine example of the trope. The combination of tan leather, terrazzo and trailing plants in the light-filled dining room makes for an ideal place to while away a long lunch or a leisurely dinner, so it's lucky that the cooking has the goods to back it up. The succinct menu covers dishes like steak tartare with mushroom fonduta and lardo or courgette flowers stuffed with Brazilian bobó de siri (a crab, cassava and tomato stew), breaded, deep-fried and served with a fresh tomato salsa. There's also some delightful pasta dishes like porchetta lasagna and an umami-rich seafood and anchovy spaghetti.
