Rosewood’s first South American property, opened in 2022, is perhaps the most emblematic of the ‘sense of place’ philosophy that guides the group. This São Paulo hotel, located within the city’s former historic hospital, embodies the Paulistano spirit to create a stunning art-filled urban oasis within the city’s central Cidade Matarazzo area. Vertical gardens inspired by Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, indigenous flora aplenty and a serious sustainability programme: everything is designed to platform São Paulo at its shining best. Interiors feature warm woods, earthy tones and tactile fabrics – all the handiwork of famed French architect Philippe Starcke. The local cultural touch comes from its collaboration with 57 different artists of the region, who together have furnished the hotel with 450 unique pieces, ranging from sculptures to paintings, drawings and tile work. The most striking of these pieces is certainly the ceiling of the hotel’s jazz bar, Rabo di Galo, which took artist Rodrigo de Azevado Saad, aka Cabelo, a total of 68 hours to complete.
