Quetzal

Toronto, Canada

Low, undulating ceilings aglow with soft recessed lights set a dramatic tone for the interiors at Quetzal, a high-end Mexican restaurant in Toronto’s Little Italy neighbourhood. The metaphorical heart of the space—and the cuisine—is a 28-foot long wood fire that flanks the dining room, where local produce, seafood and meat meet the flames before being judiciously composed onto beautiful earthenware plates. Tortillas nixtamalised in-house form a warming base for memelas and empanadas and the dessert menu also features treasures such as epazote raspados and a spiced Mexican chocolate tres leches. The wine list skews international, with options from most famous wine-producing countries included, plus a hearty section of reds and skin-contact whites by the bottle. Mezcal, tequila, and other Mexican treasures are also offered by the pour or mixed into clever house cocktails.
