Taverne Bernhardt’s

Toronto, Canada

On balmy summer evenings in Toronto’s Beaconsfield Village, you’ll find much of the neighbourhood gathered on the patio at Bernhardt’s. They’re lured there – as you should be – by the rotisserie chicken: plump White Rock birds, cooked until they’re crisp-skinned and juicy, paired with buns, slaw, pickles and fries (or potatoes and gravy). It’s pretty hard to resist, though the small plates – showcasing farm-fresh local produce – deserve a look-in too. It’s an ever-changing, reliably delicious line-up: heirloom tomatoes on toast, slathered with aioli sauce vierge; a lardon-dotted roasted fennel salad; or pine nut-sprinkled braised summer squash. There are natural wines to accompany them, along with local beers and ciders, while booze-free options include artisan sodas and tangy hibiscus juice. Dessert is all about the soft serves, served in sundae glasses and laced with unconventional flavours.
