The Temple House

Chengdu, China

The monolithic, black mirror twin towers of this Taikoo Li district hotel belie its multi-faceted character. Behind those monochromatic giants sits a luxury stay that melds the expected opulence of modern Chinese hospitality with a generous respect for heritage. Even the entrance is a juxtaposition: beyond a restored Quin Dynasty archway and (faux) historic courtyard sit the two contemporary towers housing high-tech rooms, urban oasis spa, subterranean swimming pool and three of four hotel restaurants. Minimalist, sharply curated studios, suites and a dazzling penthouse share views of Chengdu’s skyscrapers. All are vast and light-filled, pairing urban edge with subtle nods to Chinese design. Most come equipped with additional living space. In a city expectant of plush dining offerings, this hotel is a standout: The Temple Café utilises garden pickings to serve a fresh, vibrant all-day bistro menu; the sultry Tivano plates up a homage to Italy’s cookbook under a vine-covered cabana terrace, and at Jing, Jazz Age-style cocktails arrive on bar that has in-built DJ decks. The real beauty, though, is the wood-built Mi Xun Teahouse, a high-flying Sichuan restaurant that serves precision-plated, plant-based dishes inspired by a centuries-old monastery kitchen nearby.
