Yu Zhi Lan
Chengdu, China
Opened in 2011, and older sister to the Shanghai Sichuan culinary pleasure palace of the same name, the 18-cover Yu Chi Lan displays all the same attention to detail and mastery of top-quality ingredients in its exquisitely crafted set menus. One of the first venues the late food broadcaster and writer Anthony Bourdain visited in Chengdu in 2016, the restaurant serves up Chef Lan Guijun’s beautifully presented signature dishes – witness Golden Thread Noodles, a snack-house classic taken to the next level – in an intimate, four-room garden villa set on a tranquil, leafy street. Based on the 24 compound flavours of Sichuan cooking, the chef does not use MSG, chicken powder or any shortcuts in the kitchen, and, even for non-experts, it shows.
