Alila Shanghai
Shanghai, China
In a city that’s fast-paced and futuristic, Alila Shanghai delivers a dose of serenity. The urban resort, just off Weihai Road in the historic Jing’an district, is in a moments-from-everything location, near the museums, the Grand Theatre and all the shopping you could possibly want. And yet, to step into the glass-and-marble building is to walk into an oasis of water features and lush greenery, with Oscar Wang’s large-scale sculpture of a tree, its trunk and branches crafted from polished silver, taking centre stage. Earthy tones, natural finishes and Chinese craftsmanship interplay across the holistic spa, as well as the rooms and suites, which span the 12th to 17th and 27th to 39th floors, affording views of the city’s sprawl. It’s a vista that’s also to be enjoyed from the Secret Roof bar, which overlooks the terracotta-roofed shikumen neighbourhood. The restaurant on the ground floor – 500 Weihai Road – offers a Shanghainese take on seafood; the Garden Pavilion serves grilled Japanese robatayaki.
