Coa Shanghai

Shanghai, China

As the sister location to Hong Kong’s famous agave spirits-centric bar, the Shanghai outpost of Coa (named after the machete-like tool that field workers use to harvest the plants) exists in a renovated three-storey home in the Jing’An neighbourhood, surrounded by delicious dim sum restaurants and some of the city’s most spectacular temples. From La Cantina on the ground floor, to El Salon, which includes a small terrace on the second floor, and El Atico, the top-floor invite-only tasting room, the design of each space invokes the simple, rustic elegance of Mexico’s best modern-day mezcalerias. The spirits collection bears the same DNA as the flagship location – co-founder Jay Khan thoughtfully chooses tequila, mezcal and other agave spirits based on his research, travels and relationships with traditional producers – and a small cocktail menu showcasing Mexican flavours helps make for a well-rounded programme.
