Coquille Seafood Bistro

Shanghai, China

Its name meaning ‘shell’ in French, Shanghai’s elegant but never stuffy Coquille – younger sibling of neighbouring Italian trattoria Scarpetta – marries joyful Gallic bistro classics with the freshest of local ingredients to stunning effect. Founded in the spring of 2014, and with a raft of awards to its name, the restaurant’s mosaicked interior features two charming dining areas – a 40-cover first-floor space sporting dark leather banquettes and a long marble communal table, and a more intimate 30-cover room upstairs, which, when curtained off, lends itself to private events. Highlights include the iconic flambé duck à l’orange, showstopping seafood platters and a French onion soup gelato, although a glass of bubbles accompanied by oysters from the brass seafood bar is an excellent place to start.
