Clown Bar

Paris, France

Let's just be clear from the off, Clown Bar is not a wine bar; rather, this cosy spot is a restaurant offering homemade, seasonal bistronomic cooking. You'll eat well. It all started back in 1907, when Le Clown became a café that served as the meeting place for circus performers around the world. A past that's reflected in the original frieze of clown illustrations that adorns the tiled salon (the restaurant has been classified as a historical monument since 1995). The food is no laughing matter: expect authentic French cooking, with dishes that are fine enough to challenge any of the grand establishments charging a considerably higher price. The set lunch – starter, main course, dessert – is very reasonable. In the evenings and at the weekends, you might be tucking into white asparagus from the Landes with basil mousseline; langoustines and braised sucrine; or barbecue pork rib with French peas. Wines are natural.
