Le Moissonnier proves you don't have to go to France to enjoy top-notch French cuisine. On the scene since 1987, this bistro in the heart of Cologne could easily have been plucked straight from the streets of Montmartre in Paris. It certainly looks the part, with a classic bistro façade (café-curtains, Art Nouveau-esque gold lettering, big windows); inside, red banquettes, linen napkins on the tables and a cosy bar add to the ambience. This lively, unpretentious backdrop frames the well-composed dishes. Classics include roast turbot in brown butter with liquorice; duck liver pâté with a Gewürztraminer jelly; and wood-fired lamb with a citrus-Parmesan crumble. There's also an always changing dish of the day depending on what's available at the market. Though you could easily visit just to indulge in the excellent wine list and artisanal cheese cart, which is truly something to behold.
