Nolan

Athens, Greece

A white-painted, welcoming bistro adored by Athonites who love their food but hate fuss. Sotiris Kontizas, who began his career working part time at 48 under Christoforos Peskias while doing a day job in a bank in order to cover his bills, was recently a judge on Greek MasterChef. His Greek Japanese heritage can be felt in fusion plates that draw influences from the street food of Vietnam and Beijing to classic fried chicken and your grandmother's beans. Soba noodle sit alongside ceviche and cod burgers, all skilfully cooked and served on hand-thrown crockery made specially to match the restaurant’s muted colour palate. What we – and apparently everyone else in Athens who knows a bargain when they find one – love about this place is its sense of humour. Not only is it named after the owners’ favourite director, Chris Nolan of Batman fame, menus also often include cheeky dish names like the signature Barracuda for Babies, a parody on the Japanese’s love of filleting, for example. Just down the street, Sweet No
