The Peninsula Hong Kong

Hong Kong, China

The Peninsula might be Hong Kong’s high lady of hospitality – but there’s nothing fusty about this landmark hotel. At 90 years old, the silver-haired stay has aged gracefully, blending well-honed traditions with an ever-contemporary approach: guests are transported by a polished fleet of Rolls-Royces, restaurants are named after favoured former staff, while the reimagined Fu dog statue standing guard the front of the hotel is work of US artist Jim Dime. Those not arriving by helicopter enter the hotel via a palm-strewn, pillared lobby. A 2013 revamp means rooms and suites remain distinguished in style but now have all the expected mod-cons of a five-star stay. Elegant bathrooms – featuring green and white marble – add character. The Peninsula’s white-gloved, well-oiled service ensures a friction-free stay from the doorman’s doff to the whipsmart professionalism of waiters running the famous afternoon tea service. Culinary excellence also shines at eight dining and drinking offerings. Expect French flavours at Gaddi’s, authentic Alpine dishes at Swiss Chesa, sharp cocktails at Philippe Starck-designed Felix and Cantonese classics at Spring Moon. No overview is complete without mentioning the 12,000-square-foot spa: a serene sanctuary with harbour views.
